Fancy a little divine intervention?

Bruce Almighty
In the middle of a stressful day, many of us have looked to the heavens and pleaded with God for an answer. These days around Singapore it’s probably easier if you have lunch with him.

It is possible as well today as BVI, Disney and its media agency OMD, have teamed up with Singapore’s very own Table Advertising Specialist Alternate Ads to promote Jim Carrey’s new movie, Bruce Almighty.

In the film, Jim Carrey plays a down-trodden news reporter who is always asking “Why me?” Finally God answers his question by giving him (that’s Carrey) His (God’s) power for a week to see just how good he (that’s Carrey again) got it.

Which is where the idea of having lunch with Carrey, complete in a Michelangelo-esque pose, sitting on your table comes in. It seems the promoters are using that little piece of divine inspiration you’re seeking to gets you to see the film.

In actual fact, Carrey is the main focus of an advertisement placed on your table. But the medium itself is a good choice. If Carrey were God and he really was there at your lunch table, he would probably be complaining that we’re all spending too much time eating and not enough time praying.

That’s where Alternate Ads is making a big name for itself. The company was formed circa 2002 and made its Table Ads debut early 2003. The company sells ads space on the table of bistro, sandwich bars, cafes, clubs, and lounge then design and places the ads on the tables.

According to Angela C. Tan, founder of Alternate Ads, the market is saturated with outdoor advertising, but what puts their product above the rest is that it holds a captive audience for at least half an hour.

“The principle behind table advertising is that you have a captive audience. The ads are placed on tables in carefully selected food & beverage establishment, where yuppies, trend-setters, influential and high disposable income patrons are known to frequent, “Says Tan”

Whether you are waiting for your meal or having a drink you have no choice but to notice what’s on the table. “Put that together with the amount of time a person spends at these places you know the advertisement is going to get recognition.

“The design element of the advertisement is also very important and the latest campaign for Bruce Almighty captures that spirit very well. You can’t help but be amused by the picture of Jim Carrey - complete with a leaf over his loins - and it becomes a conversation piece between those sitting at the table” says Tan.
